From what I have seen and heard of Adam talking about his adolescence, he was not bullied outright. Of course, he was not "out" in high school, and he was a rather big guy, so not an easy target. However, my impression was that he was not part of the "in crowd." He wasn't one of the popular kids. In most high schools, the guy who sings in musicals and the school choir really isn't cool. In the seventh grade he didn't have anyone to sit with at lunch.
Internally, Adam felt awkward and different; lonely and depressed (his words from interviews). He talked about putting on a persona so he would be accepted. So, Adam wasn't bullied because he was starting to develop that immense social intelligence that he has; learning how to get along, how to ingratiate himself to others, and learning to balance being himself with being accepted by others. Those are all skills that not only served him then, but serve him now as well.
But I imagine as a closeted teenager, putting on this persona while he was struggling to figure himself out underneath was very difficult. TBH, middle and high school were nightmare times for many folks; especially those who didn't fit the mold. I would bet that if we took a poll of AToppers, a significant percentage would say they had a hard time in middle and high school; because we are talking about a group of people who are mainly female and smart (a deadly combination in high school), who are independent and free thinkers, who have, over their lives, broken out of a lot of boxes. I know I, for one, was picked on and belittled a bit, but mostly just was that weird kid who ruined the grading curve, sucked up to teachers, and played the violin. I wasn't gonna get elected to the homecoming court, or even get asked to the prom.
All this to say, I think many of us relate to kids who are outsiders and kids who are bullied. Many of us relate to Adam as a teen, feel empathy for that kid, and feel a sense of triumph and vindication that the weird kid who no one would sit with in the lunchroom now is loved by millions and is one of the coolest dudes in Hollywood. We love that he preaches strength, honesty, being oneself and marching forward. We KNOW, from our own experiences, how much that message would have been appreciated when we were teens, and is appreciated by teens today.

Thanks! So sweet! What does "home coming queen" mean? I remember it also form the song of The Monkees? It is a festival that occurs in High school mainly to celebrate school spirit and football. The team has been on the road and they are coming back home to play a big rivalry gme. That is called homecoming. Often for the week prior, the school has a spirit week, where different activities are done daily, culminating in a friday pep rally, the football game in the evening, and usually saturday is a big dance. Usually kids dress to the nines. They usually vote for a homecoming king and queen that get their crown that evening at the dance. It happened this past weekend. My son went to his dance dressed to the nines. He is a freshman in High school It also happens at colleges and universities where football is big.

Thanks! So sweet! What does "home coming queen" mean? I remember it also form the song of The Monkees? Wikipedia says: Homecoming is an annual tradition of the United States. People, towns, high schools and colleges come together, usually in late September or early October, to welcome back alumni and former residents. It is built around a central event, such as a banquet and, most often, a game of American football, or, on occasion, basketball, ice hockey or soccer. When celebrated by schools, the activities vary widely. However, they usually consist of a football game played on a school's home football field, activities for students and alumni, a parade featuring the school's marching band and sports teams, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen (and at many schools, a Homecoming King). A dance commonly follows the game. That pretty much sums it up. Is there anything like that in Finland?

Thanks! So sweet! What does "home coming queen" mean? I remember it also form the song of The Monkees? Home Coming is a High School event, usually situated a the day when the football team is playing on their home field. Student vote for a Home Coming King and Queen and their court (like 3 or 4 other couples). Sometimes their is a parade for HC and the King and Queen ride on a float. A coronation is held during halftime. Think of it like prom, but aligned with football. It's nothing that means anything, really. Just another pointless High School function for the kids. ETA: Or what the others stated.
