The gist of the response I read in that Asian American Blog:
" . . . Hopeful for something that showed respect, appreciation, understanding for Japanese culture," instead, "mishmash of what white people think is 'Japanese' all thrown into one ugly, cluttered . . . four minute nightmare" that "screamed, 'Exotic Japan!' and perpetuated 'fetishizing Asian women. '"
That is how someone feels whose perspective, I think, has to at least be considered. I think it was kind of deep to Gil Asakawa.
Is he or she right and Perry wrong? I don't know. Should Katy Perry care that she got some negative feedback? I think she should, at the least because I am sure she has Asian fans who care about her.
And to be clear, I love Katy Perry. But I think everyone benefits from trying to understand when pesky PC kinds of issues come up.
ETA: OK, that's me - proud member of the offense police! It is an interesting issue to me, but I'll stop now. (There is always scroll, y'know, and there's plenty o' puppet talk, too, to enjoy . . . ).
(And Adam started it.)

Someone asked earlier about Adam's puppet, thinking his was on a different side from the others...and I see from this pic that intact it is only Naya's that operates from the Left side and that is likely to keep them all in a consistent frame....easier to photograph...lol....

I thought Katy looked lovely last night. I think the Japanese culture is beautiful. I feel so naïve because I never thought to ask myself "what is she trying to prove in that Japanese outfit?" Maybe I am not deep enough. So many words and thoughts over a beautiful Japanese dress. I know! I loved it too and thought the whole production was a beautiful homage to Japan. And Katy does have certain cultures she adores and is obsessed with. Like for instance, she got married in India & had many traditional things as part of her ceremony! Was that racist?

My TWO CENTS…… is actually just ONE WORD.
INTENT.
I ask myself these questions.
Was it intended to be fun? Was it intended to simply entertain? Was it intended to start a conversation? Was the intent to shock? Was the intent to offend? Was it intended to hurt someone? Was the intent from an obvious place of hatred?
I would personally only be truly offended by the intent of the last two….. and possibly side-eye and further examine what is behind an intent to offend.

My two cents on the Katy Perry presentation - not That long ago, the English language was much more expansive. There were many, many words we would use to describe something we found tasteless or poorly presented (vulgar, crude, tawdry, garish, gaudy, loud, trashy, showy, ostentatious, cheap, chintzy, kitschy, kitsch, inelegant, tacky , indelicate, uncouth, unseemly, crass, tactless, gauche, undiplomatic, indiscreet, inappropriate, offensive) before we went all the way to the most inflammatory words such as "racist." To use racist as a cover word for poor taste, or to use it rather than explaining what we, personally, dislike about the presentation is lazy thinking. Gets a response, usually all out of proportion to the perceived offense. And I think that to use the word racist indiscriminately takes the meaning away from actions that are truly "racist." IMO For me, when Adam says "it ain't that deep" he is reacting to an out of proportion statement. BUT, I LOVE the puppets!!!

Especially since it seemed to be something she isn't told often. It was almost like he knew exactly what she needed to hear.
