I think the Ama performance is one of those events that will never really go away, and will always be mentioned and discussed, just like the idol result in the finale will too, because multiple elements of both cultural and social relevance got intertwined with one person's individual life event. Both the Ama's and the AI-result were and still are wrapped in controversy and have had enough public resonance that they were talked about around the globe, were reported on an incredible amount and variety of media and are still mentioned on a regular basis, 5 years on, and not just by the fan base, but by many others too.
These events are part of Adam's history, they always will be, but the more his career rises, the more the sting that was associated with them at the time, gets felt a little less.
I think the reason we are talking about them today, was that comment made by Roman Fernandez, which was reported today and is quoted by Q3 on page 1.
No way, Adam had a benefit, because he was gay. Concur with what you guys said here about that comment. In fact, it reminded me immediately on women, who for years could not crack the glass ceiling and get into certain positions, but once finally one woman made it, it was immediately said, she only got the job, because she was a woman. The first few, who broke through the glass ceiling (s), were qualified many times over. In fact, had they been male, they would have held that position 10 + years sooner.
Similar situation now with Adam. Somebody who says that Adam has benefited from coming out, must look at one side only. Count the one interview on a gay news program, and the Glaad award, but not count the fact, that Adam's lack of radio play, or his lack of presence in TV, on commercials or on certain public events, are very much slowing him down. It may just be that two things are happening.
a) Adam is stronger than those that are either intentionally or unintentionally holding him back
b) The times were right
Adam will always have to work harder for the same respect that others get with ease, but will also have the benefit that while he gets to enjoy the fruits of his rockstar status and career, he can also look back and see that he has made a difference. I think for many pop stars who rise to fame quickly and with ease, the question of purpose of one's own path is a difficult one, and one that has destroyed some of them (JB anyone?).
As far as Gene Simmons is concerned? He is a misogynous, homophobic, pompous ass, who only thinks about money, and not art or altruistic purpose, when it comes to what he does. If money were the only goal in a music career (and for Gene it is), then the advice to be closeted is correct, imo. I totally believe that a closeted artist can make more and that things are contrary to what Fernandez says. Obviously, had Adam tried that, I would not be a fan, neither would many others here, and my guess is, this site and many others around the world would not exist.
The problem is, that I don't think that for Adam that path would have even worked, he was already out in LA in all those years prior to idol and he would have been endlessly hounded by people trying to out him or trying to get their own 5 minutes of fame, just like it was in those 4 weeks between the end of idol and the publication of the RS article. Would a straight person with Adam's looks and talents have it easier in the industry, absolutely, but could Adam have chosen the path to stay closeted? Not really. He had already lived open, and rumors were swirling about him, and also Adam trying to stay closeted would have stunted his freedom of expression to such a degree that I am not sure which part of him would be left.
Sometimes I have asked myself, what type of human being would Adam have been, if he had been born in a society where he had to keep this under wraps. Well, he would be a different person. The way things are today, Adam only had the choice of staying a private person and forgetting the public career or to be out. And maybe that is why he hesitated so long, to go for it. He could not possibly see how the path could and would work out, because nobody had traveled on it, but he could certainly see how he could fail. He had to be very brave to take the chances that he took.
And I don't think that Gene has any brain cells or fibers of integrity inside of him to appreciate any of this.
