When Adam stays home -- we all get kind of wonky. So I for one and very happy when he is working and partying and staying really busy! Can someone else let me know if you can get to the blog at: adamtopiablog.blogspot.com/yes

Out of all the thoughts presented, here is the concept I wish to speak to. We have a powerful myth in America: the myth of the individual and his self-determination, of equality of opportunity--that if each of us just tries our hardest we can be anything we want to be and do anything we want to do. The word progress by definition is a continuum. At any time in history, one can pick a social value or political injustice and ask has progress been made toward an improved condition? Sometimes the steps are small and in the pressing concerns of the present seem unacceptable but positive movement is being made. However, we need incentive to move forward and create a better world and often these incentives are our myths and as myths go, more progress has been realized because of the existence of "American Dream" than can be measured. It tells us that we are the architects of our lives and our future regardless of the starting point of the process. Life is not a level playing field and there will always be, despite how much we wish it otherwise, those who have a harder path. Chance alone creates obstacles which seem insurmountable at times, to say nothing of natural disasters. Certainly, as you stated MWP, "underprivileged groups aren't really playing at anything, they ARE victims, they are victimized by history and by the rest of our culture, and they don't need to do anything special to earn that distinction. There is simply no hiding from the fact that ... this is an unequal country." But it is also equally true that there are many opportunities in this country for positive results along the continuum of progress and often those results are achieved when we try our hardest to be what we want to be. If you hold the standard to be history then it is clear that enormous strides have been and will continue to be made as long as our goal are clear. Both of you have pointed out two paths to achieve a better world, through example (Adam) and through action (Jacob). I just wanted to point out that the focus is an improving world and not Utopia. I consider myself an optimistic, constructive realist. Linda: this is an interesting point, and well said. I certainly agree that the trade-mark American optimism has done this country a lot of good, and I think, frequently, people do believe and achieve differently in this country, even if that optimism is based on what is ultimately a utopian myth, and this can be a wonderful thing. I also agree that progress must be measured, and celebrated, along a continuum. Certainly with respect to gay rights, ugly as a lot of the attitudes still are, there is a lot to cheer about right now, and I firmly believe that this is one battle we are rapidly winning (in the grand scheme of things). I typed a longer response to your post here, but I've deleted it, because, on consideration, it was clearly too far off topic, no matter how interesting I find the issue. Then I typed a shorter summary of my thoughts, and then deleted that too, LOL, because it really wasn't Adam relevant. Suffice it to say, I don't share your optimism that we continue to progress on racial issues--I worry we're moving in the opposite direction while awareness of the problem is fading, and an increasing number of Americans thinks racism is entirely a thing of the past, or that it now applies to whites as much as to current minorities. But I hope you are right about our continued progress, and I certainly make no demands for Utopia. ETA: Linda, I PM'd you with a link to an Austin-American Statesman op-ed that has me all up in arms about this subject, LOL.

Perhaps it made Jacob feel better to spout off a bit, but I don't think it was wise. His focus should be "eye on the prize" and he should be aware that "likeability" goes far in this competition. Justified or not, his comments turned me off to him. I don't like to participate in anyone's "pity party" and that's how it came across to me. He needs to pull up his big boy drawers and get back to work - no more complaints or excuses - after all, the public that he put down is the same public that could vote him in. Wise up, Jacob.

What is the purpose of the blog if it is a duplicate of what is posted here?
Q3 comment: It makes it easy to read old articles and gives me a place to repost the old articles from Planet Fierce and ATop 1. And many people prefer to read articles in blog format.

It looks like everyone but me can to the blog through the link at the top of the page. What in the world am I doing wrong? And why does the link in Q's comment work?
I am a tech failure I'm afraid.
