I do not think that what I'm about to say is the intent of Adam's There I Said It. But in the spirit of interpretation, I thought it was an excellent way of addressing someone who is gay being in a relationship with someone who is afraid to come out. Living in your shadow is then about complying with the deceit, but not being able to live that way anymore. If I interpret it in a mind frame of it being a personal song about a relationship, I see it as someone who wants to have a truthful, meaningful, deep relationship being thwarted by someone who wants to keep it superficial. Or is incapable of sharing a deep relationship. Living in your shadow then, to me, has almost a controlled vibe. Like the person who is superficial has been able to put all the restrictions on the relationship. I actually love the strength and conviction of the words: because revealing yourself is scary, the person speaking is still holding hope for the relationship (Let's make the smoke and mirrors disappear), and who wouldn't want to live in a completely honest revealed relationship and be loved for exactly who you are? ETA: Plus having the strength to walk away from a relationship that may be important, because it is not all you want it to be, is not all you know it could be. The refusal to settle. Knowing what you want and being able to express it clearly even if it means the end of the relationship. I hadn't thought of it being about the music business, I'll ponder that. ETA: Boy, it just clicked for me that it absolutely could be about the music business, I get it now. 6 degrees separation...Adam sang at the country music award show last week.....the show was honouring the TV show Nashville and many of the stars of that show were at the awards.....TISI lyrics as applied to gay relationship are essentially the story arc of one of the characters as he struggles against coming out but does for a gay bf who is out and hates the hiding...the character is Luke . If they had this song playing the closeness of the lyrics is almost scary.

I'm not very good with accents! LOL What did his grandma want Adam to do when he was 12? She wanted him to be on a soap opera, "Adam you would be so good on a soap." Thanks. That's what I thought he was saying, but then I was thinking or is it sofa or maybe a Jewish reference that I'm not getting. Obviously, I was overthinking it LOL

OT, and I can't remember if I saw this here. So if it is a repeat, apologies. If it isn't, enjoy!
On topic, I love it when Adam feels comfortable to share things about his family (Grandma Annette) because I admit to a curiosity about that part of his life. Would Grandma Annette have been Leila's mom?

I love the Luke storyline on "Nashville" - especially when the super successful gay-but-not-openly country star told him last week, " You could've been like me" and Luke says, "Yes - but I'm happier being me." (I've wondered if parts of Luke's story reflect any writers' direct following of Adam's career. Probabaly not, right? But then there's Adam singing on the same show that "Nashville" is being recognized at . . . ).

I think you guys are familiar with Scott Bradlee, known for being the creator of Postmodern Jukebox, an "ever-evolving, revolving collective of performers playing popular music in period styles." (wikipedia) I am so enamoured of his style, of him giving so many great vocalists a platform and reimagining songs that I would never think of doing in a different style, but love when I hear them. Anyway, here's a sample (Haley,of course, because I am also enamoured of her, but all the vocalists I have heard sing with him are incredible): So, my pertinent on topic question for the board: Any ideas about which of Adam's songs would be best translated to a vintage or entirely different style, using a Postmodern vocalist? I'm thinking For Your Entertainment, Evil in the Night, Fever and maybe Outlaws of Love. And just to give you a sample of Not-Hayley Postmodern Jukebox: And just one more, Anaconda done in vintage bluegrass hoedown

red panda - That is a great mashup! There is a split second in it of a dance routine that was used with one of Adam's songs, and was well done. It also included a little bit of Sasha from her TV dance competition. I saved it, but it was lost a couple of dead computers ago. I can't even remember which song it was. Does anyone remember? ETA: I think I remember that the song was one he previewed on a promo trip to Austria...

I would love to know how others interpret "There I Said It." I tend to think Adam is mostly singing about one thing and that there are other levels, ways it can be understood, too, but just when I think he is singing mostly about a personal relationship, there's a word or phrase that makes me think "no, he is mostly singing about . . ." and THEN there's another word or phrase and I think,"no, it's neither of those, it's . . ." I tend to think it's likely mostly about a personal relationship but then I think, who the hell's SHADOW would Adam have ever been in? So then I think it's likely mostly about career "money people" because I can see how, if I were Adam - as talented, gorgeous, talented, sexy/cute, talented, nice, talented, etc. as he is, and still be told, "sorry, not quite marketable enough for this or that" - I might want to say someththing. Anyone else thinking about these lyrics? Care to share? ETA - I have read other stuff online but it was more about the musicality of the song, technicality of the singing, than lyrics. To me TISI is absolutely about the relationship and breakup with RCA. They asked for authenticity in his music, he created his 'baby' Trespassing and they rejected it as too real and the proceeded to destroy it with the addition of NCYE and BTIKM. Any other explainations he adds are to make it appeal to the masses and maybe to divert a bit from the real source. I think the Trespassing era was much, much harder on him than anyone realized at the time and we are slowly getting glimpses of that.

When I first heard the song I thought it's about a personal relationship. But according to Adam the lyrics are more directed toward the public (or something like that). I am editing my comment just now after reading @graciejane 's interpretation (above). Perfectly said from my point of view. I'm sure that the TP era put Adam in a dark hole for a while, but I'm grinning happily every time now that I get to see "Shady" and "Trespassing" performed live on stage.
