Pop radio in the US did not play the hell out of GT for Adam. Yes he got pretty good play but there is a reason he did not chart higher and that was the spins he received from radio. For example when he was at #23 and close to his peak he was getting around 4,000 spins. At the same time Weeknd at #1 was getting over 18,000 spins. Demi at #8 was getting over 10,000 spins. Taylor was #4 at that time and getting 14,000 spins and of course more when she reached #1. If you don't get the higher spins you keep getting passed and you don't move up the charts too far. That is what normally happens with Adam. The favored artists jump over him with deals and with 3 or 4 songs from the same album before he eventually stalls. If he were getting more spins he would have charted higher. I am thankful for the play he received as it helped him but you have to be realistic. They did not play the hell out of his music. Places like in my area did not play him much at all. I would love for it to happen for him this time tho. WWFM got good play early in his career (not played in my area tho until he was about the peak) and I would be happy with that now. Don't really care about #1 but give him a good chance. His music has always been just as good if not better than the other music on the radio. Others don't seem to wait for the elusive right song. They just get played.
While he DOES get played, there has always been something hinky about HOW he is played on radio. Radio in US DID NOT play the hell out of GT. The stats are very easy to find. They did keep it going for 6 months which I thought was crazy. imo, 1-4 songs from TOH could and should have been being dropped from June to October until the era was over. GT and ALN were too little and too late to save the era. Why did that happen? We may never know. Why isn't he cut the hourly spins that others have gotten? We may never know that either. Sometimes imo he is treated as the red haired bastard child with radio play. Not fair imo. He is just as good or better that most on US radio. He shouldn't be treated as lesser than. He is just as equal as anyone that is being played on Pop Top 40. There should be NO distinction between artists.
Trespassing era was the same situation. Releasing BTIKM through the holiday break. Only to have it resurface in January and it was dead in the water. And waiting forever for NCOE to have Dr Luke do his magic production on it and again...dead in the water. I will never understand that a Bill Board #1 album got so lost with US radio play. What a travesty. That album was immaculate for Pop radio.
This is why I say that US radio is hinky towards him. I can't exactly put my finger on it and define it. It's just weird how it goes for him radio wise.
Having said all this...I think he is very successful. He has a great, wonderful an diversified career. I think that he will have great longevity. He is a powerhouse performer. He brings all his fans on an amazing journey and he does accomplish all that with shoddy radio play in the US. It just sticks in my craw that I don't hear more of him on my countries radio waves.
I still believe that WWFM could have been a bigger hit in the US had Cumulus stations added it before it was already peaking. Why didn't they add it? And I think that could have helped set up him up for more play for subsequent singles. IIHY for example, I have NEVER heard on the radio and I live in the #4 radio market.
I think Adam is very successful, but only moderately in the US. Some people like Shosh will say he's sold the most in the US but it's all relative to the population. I went through all his singles/albums and he's had the most platinum certifications in Australia. No wonder he was asked to be a judge on XFactor. But I don't think he'll be asked to be a judge on The Voice US as he hasn't had the commercial success. They haven't even asked him to be a mentor/advisor after all these seasons.
