I am glad that Adam continues to speak of his positive experience on Idol. My guess is that in the very early years of the show, it would have been very different for LGBT contestants, just like it was in society. By the time Adam came along, things were starting to ease up but the show still did not make a big deal of sexuality at that time. Besides, they were excited about Adam and wanted him to win. Adam was there to compete like everyone else and the show let him do that. When the pictures surfaced of him kissing an ex, they were respectful of Adam and let him decide how he wanted to handle it. They did right by him, imo.
It was only when The Voice first started that sexuality became part of these shows. TV talked more about their contestants sexuality than their talent. Then Idol followed them with making a persons sexuality part of the show. And Adam Levine, trying to show how TV was better than Idol, falsely claimed that Idol kept Adam Lambert in the closet. Not sure why Levine was trying to speak for our Adam when Adam had given many interviews saying the opposite about Idol. Nigel Lythgoe called Levine's statement BS. He said he was not on Lambert's season but he said there was no way that guy was in the closet. HA. However, he also said Lambert was bold and confident but he let his talent do the talking and didn't choose to have his sexuality become the focus of his run on the show.
And I am aware that different contestants had different experiences. David Archuletta gave an interview once where he said he was traumatized by being on Idol and being unsure about his sexuality was part of it. Idol didn't even know he was struggling with his identity but even if they had known, he was 16. It should have been his parents job to keep him off the show until he was emotionally ready. Not send him there and expect Idol personnel to try their hands at therapy. Besides, shows like Idol and TV are good at exploiting contestants (if you let them) but that is not always helpful.

Thanks for your re-cap, luleene. It was a different time back then. Adam showed honesty and poise throughout the process. I said it at the time and I will say it again, I can't think of another gay celeb at the time who, when asked, was so open and willing to talk about his sexuality as Adam was. I can't think of one. It was just a subject that interviewers didn't ask about back then. Of course, when that kiss photo came out, there was no question, but Adam was out and honest with the other contestants and with the AI staff. And of course, he had been living an openly gay life for quite a while. And the big difference with Adam was that, when asked, he didn't shy away at all. He did say that being gay got to be the only thing he was asked about for a while, but he played along nicely. Finally, he got to talk more about his music.
I give him a lot of credit for how he handled it all.
We seem to be witnessing a transition period with Adam right now. It will be interesting to see what his next step will be, music-wise. Meanwhile, it's good that he has other things on-going. Animation characters, which he is a master at, "the musical" which apparently is still in the works, and other things.
