I never did understand Simon's aversion to "theatrical". Broadway has some of the best singers out there. It doesn't exactly translate to an insult.
Maybe Simon is just not a fan of the stage...who knows. I think he had a very narrow preference for what kind of singers he liked...at least from watching part of Adam's season. I didn't watch AI in general so I may be completely off base.

I don't think that theatrical is an insult. It's just different and for me it tends to belong on the stage, but not always. We all have our preferences, probably based on setting and mood and the song itself. I do really like pulled back emotive Adam, but then again I absolutely loved his last totally OTT "Witch Hunt' show in Vegas!! That was almost two years ago.

I was just talking about Simon using theatrical as a veiled insult...that's definitely how he used it, especially during Adam's audition.

Not a new thought, of course, but I'm just thinking how good it is that Adam is known for his good personality, his humor and kindness, his intelligence and ability to speak well publicly. Not all singers have those qualities. With some singers, we rarely see them off the stage. Adam's assets beyond his voice are proving to be very marketable.
Like the other Afters songs we've heard, I like the sound of Neck.
And liking Adam's beard-free face. He looks so young! I guess he just felt like having a smooth face. I'm sure he'll have to be clean-shaven for Cabaret, but that's not for a while yet.
