This is the stuff YOU CANNOT FIND in any grammar... it's priceless to me. Thanks  OTT, but I love it when people fight here on Atop :D, for one reason only, it's very beneficial for my vocabulary, things like "why don't you take THAT and stuff it to your pipe". I don't remember who said it or even what it exactly means, but I love the sound of it Haha! I'm afraid it was me and I took great liberties with the expression because I was angry. The correct saying is "Why don't you put that in your pipe and smoke it!"  means..."so THERE!, what do you think about THAT!" I know we're way past this, aleksandrakv, but I wanted to mention there is a very famous lyric from the musical West Side Story using this expression. The song is called "America" and it's sung by a group of Puerto Rican women to whom English is a second language. The character of Anita sings: Puerto Rico My heart's devotion Let it sink back in the ocean Always the hurricanes blowing Always the population growing And the money owing And the sunlight streaming And the natives steaming I like the island Manhattan Smoke on your pipe

Okay I’m sorry this is such a stupid question but it really bothers me...what does “I ain’t broken but I need a fix” in Shady exactly mean? :-[ My take: Things that are broken need to be fixed. Fix=verb But Adam needs a fix of another kind. Fix=noun, specifically, a narcotic shot; in context, sex. I think a "fix" in this context could be anything that makes you feel better, booze, drugs, sex, or dancin & clubbing! Doesn't he have his dancin shoes on in Shady and is going to an underground club to meet all his freaky friends??! (And hoping a pick up will occur) |

Maybe, along with all the words to the Trespassing songs, there should be an "alternative" glossary of terms, so we not-so-hip folks can understand what Adam is *really* singing about. Or not... ;D Yeah! I always thought 'rusty umbrella' was ...well...just an umbrella that was old and rusted out. But fellow Adamtopians educated me in Adam-terminology! ;D  |

Alexandra, you are cracking me up! Sometimes I am bothered by what seems to be overacting in some of Adam's performances. Where is the line between acting and true emotion? Interesting discussion. Here is an extreme example of a performance in which such pain is conveyed, but Ethel Waters is clearly playing a part. It doesn't matter to me because it elicits an emotional response in me. Shady's fix is SEX! Am I the only one who has trouble not singing "take me underground, deep under the SHEETS"?? Maybe just me... Didn't someone ask Adam which songs were the best for sex? So many of them are sexy! He answered with one song (maybe Shady?), then another song if you are like a rabbit, or something. Now that I can hear the rhythms I am curious of what works for him! |
