But couldn't his words have a different meaning? Maybe more sadness for China's human rights or animal rights record. SaveWhat post of Brian's are you all referring to? Bringing my post over from earlier in the thread. I never thought about it being sad. Don't know if this has already been posted but I hadn't seen it. I interpret this as his quandry over appreciating the beauty, while knowing the human rights of the country!

I didn't immediately think of depression either, but then I didn't know about Brian's background either. It's quite an ambiguous comment. It did strike me as something to do with Shanghai and its human rights, too. Maybe Brian will clarify? BTW, News flash!!! I just happened to see a snip of Entertainment Tonight and at the end was a teaser about ADAM being on it tomorrow with an interview about RHPS. There was a short flash of Adam dressed as Eddie standing next to a woman who was interviewing him, I think. Anyway, he SHOULD be on ET tomorrow. It's on CBS at 6:30 CDT in my area. It'll probably be short, but HE IS ON TV PROMOTING RHPS!!!!!!!

Just some random thoughts.
I think Dr. May has trouble dealing with the human rights issues, animal rights, the air pollution in China that is ever persistent (much less in Shanghai than in Beijing and Hong Kong. The pollution is destroying a country and its people. It is still a communist country and the concept of the architecture in Shanghai compared to the rest of China is so out of place and exceedingly progressive and modern. My husband says the buildings have light shows every evening in Shanghai. I think he overthinks, and as a result has trouble dealing with the dichotomy in China. He is on such a high on this trip and is visiting places that have been years since he saw it last or seeing it the first time. maybe he probably has touble dealing with the changes, and the lack of time to take it all in. I think he wishes he had longer in these places to fully take in what China has become. It is 180 degrees the opposite of the UK. I would be a zombie considering the time differences, and am surprised he is doing as well as he is, and he is still recovering from the food poisoning. That will take its toll on someone his age. I can say this as I am his age.
I hope he is not in a dark period, but rather having trouble taking it all in. Maybe he is thinking that the tour ends soon and Adam will be on his way and the fun will be hiatus until Adam is free again. Maybe he thinks about his mortality.

Yes at times he does. It got really bad in the later 80s - his marriage crumbled, his dad died, Freddie was dying. He got so low that he almost killed himself at one point but then checked into a facility and got some support and came out the other end in a much better place but he has stated that sometimes depression does strike him from time to time still... Read this article for more: AN ARTICLE ON THE SUBJECTAnd another....Brian's post makes me sad -- I really hope he doesn't slip back into that pit. I was thinking how happy he and Roger must be to finally perform in China -- clearly I was way off base about how Brian "must" feel. Brian just did that interview on the Dolphin hunts in Japan, I expect those type issues weigh heavy on him.
